Part Time STEM Events Facilitator

Big Brothers Big Sisters Twin Cities (BBBSTC) seeks a cohort of professionals to lead STEM activities for youth aged 8 to 18, offering enriching and empowering experiences through programming in partnership with our grant requirements and commitments. We’re dedicated to empowering young minds and fostering potential. Join us to inspire curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking in youth enrolled with BBBS. In this role, you’ll work with staff to facilitate engaging STEM sessions with youth (this happens at our office in North Minneapolis and across the Twin Cities). Your efforts will equip the next generation with essential STEM skills for future success.

This is a Part-time, Independent Contractor opportunity. BBBSTC aims to work with individuals and/or organizations who have access to STEM-related technologies to bring on-site. Priority events include:

  • Robotics
  • 3D printing
  • Coding
  • Drones
  • Engineering
  • Technology

Job Details

Location: Minneapolis, MN, with some sessions having potential to be offered across the Twin Cities metro area
Payment: $300 per session (estimated 3 hours with set up and tear down). Includes all prep time and transportation. BBBS will reimburse or purchase needed supplies.

Start Date: Immediately – Programming events begin in April

Responsibilities

  • Ensure clear communication of STEM session focus, title, and detailed descriptions well in advance to agency staff for promotional purposes, ensuring accurate representation of content and maximizing participant engagement.
  • Procure necessary supplies and materials for STEM sessions, ensuring availability and appropriateness for planned activities.
  • Plan and organize sessions by curating a blend of ongoing projects alongside one-time activities, and prepare materials accordingly, to ensure seamless execution and successful attainment of program goals.
  • Set up session spaces, arranging equipment and materials as needed to create an engaging and conducive learning environment for participants.
  • Conduct post-session cleanup and maintenance tasks, including storing equipment, disposing of waste, and ensuring the cleanliness and safety of the session area for future us
  • Provide guidance and support to staff members before and during the session to ensure the effective implementation of STEM activities, including directing them on facilitation techniques and utilization of educational resources.
  • Represent BBBSTC in a professional and appropriate manner at all times and uphold BBBSTC’s JEDI (justice, equity, diversity and inclusion) values

Qualifications

  • Flexibility to work both on-site and off-site, as required by event locations and schedules.
  • Proven experience in event facilitation and curriculum development, preferably in a STEM education setting.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively train and support staff members in STEM activity implementation.
  • Demonstrated passion for STEM education and outreach, with a commitment to inspiring curiosity and creativity in participants of all ages.
  • Youth work experience, demonstrating proficiency in conflict management and the ability to engage with diverse groups of young people.
  • Group facilitation experience, showcasing attention to detail and the ability to effectively manage group dynamics.
  • Diverse background and a people-oriented personality, enabling you to connect with individuals from various backgrounds and foster inclusivity in STEM activities, aligned with principles of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI).
  • Excellent communicator with the ability to convey complex STEM concepts in an accessible manner to diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of STEM subjects and their applications, along with an understanding of how STEM translates into future career opportunities.
  • Comfortable working in an in-person capacity, engaging directly with participants during events and workshops.

Big Brothers Big Sisters Twin Cities is the largest and oldest youth mentoring organization in the greater Twin Cities serving Hennepin, Ramsey, Anoka and parts of Dakota and Washington counties. Each year, we match up to 2,600 youth (Littles) and their families with caring adults (Bigs) who volunteer as youth mentors.
